White City History Tour

History walk of White City

On Sunday 14th May, with the sun bright across the estate, local tour guide Joanna led a history walk of White City. Starting on the site of the 1908 Olympics marathon finish line (at White City Place), the tour crossed the estate, seeing how the blocks were set out on a north-south axis to maximise natural light and stopping to look at the public art reliefs on buildings including the Ark Swift school. The tour continued through the Japanese Garden at Hammersmith Park, the oldest Japanese Garden in the UK and still maintained by the Japanese Garden Society every month. It concluded at the BBC Television Centre site, now flats, cafes and studios for multiple companies. Keep an eye out for future tours and thanks to Joanna for this free tour for residents!
